Ayurveda, meaning "the science of life", is the world's oldest holistic healing system, originating in India over 5,000 years ago. It is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between mind, body, and spirit. Its primary focus is to promote good health, not fight disease.
Ayurveda teaches that the universe is made up of five elements: Aakash (space), Jala (water), Prithvi (earth), Teja (fire), and Vayu (air). These elements combine in the human body to form three life forces or energies — the doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Every person has a unique combination of the three doshas. Understanding your dominant dosha guides diet, lifestyle, and treatment for lasting health.
Space + Air
Controls movement, breathing, blinking, muscle contraction, heartbeat and cellular communication. Vata governs all motion in the body and mind.
When out of balance
Anxiety, dry skin, constipation, restlessness and irregular digestion.
Fire + Water
Controls digestion, metabolism, and certain hormones linked to appetite. Pitta governs the body's energy of transformation — turning food into nutrients.
When out of balance
Inflammation, infection, digestive issues, anger and skin rashes.
Water + Earth
Controls body structure, immune system, and moisture. Kapha provides the physical substance and stability that holds the body together and lubricates the joints.
When out of balance
Weight gain, respiratory conditions, depression, lethargy and excess mucus.
Kerala is widely recognised as the home of authentic Ayurveda. The state's humid climate, abundance of medicinal herbs, and centuries-old tradition of practice have produced a uniquely potent form of Ayurvedic healing. At Kaalimadom Ayurveda Hospital, we uphold these classical Kerala traditions, preparing medicines fresh in small batches using time-honoured methods.
Kerala's Ayurvedic knowledge descends through unbroken lineages of practitioner families, preserving techniques documented in the Ashtanga Hridayam and related classical texts.
The Western Ghats bordering Kerala are among the world's most biodiverse regions. Over 900 medicinal plant species grow here, many exclusive to this region, forming the foundation of classical formulations.
At Kaalimadom Ayurveda Hospital, medicines are prepared fresh in small batches using time-honoured methods — ensuring potency and purity that mass-produced alternatives cannot replicate.
Kerala Ayurveda is particularly renowned for its Panchakarma protocols — deeply therapeutic cleansing therapies administered across both our Thodupuzha and Ernakulam centres.
